5 Reasons you need to put down the phone and pick up a sketchbook

The world we live in is so loud and bossy. We are constantly taking in random information and being told what we like or don’t like. It can be completely overwhelming. It can also be extremely confusing. You basically have a stranger constantly telling you what you want, but have you ever questioned it. The stranger tells you Blue Light Glasses are a must, you need to buy them. So you do. The stranger fills your social media feed full of wedding pics and pregnancy updates, so you assume you are the only single gal left. So you start to lose hope. But have you ever stopped to question the stranger? Have you ever even contemplated the idea that blue light glasses might be a scam and there could be plenty of other single baby-less women out there? I want you to hear the noise for what it is. Noise.

My father recently made two changes in his life that have been for the better. First, he got rid of his smart phone and moved back to the classic flip phone. No games, no apps, no easy way to text. This change has resulted in less noise. The second thing he did was pick up a sketchbook. He has several and they are all pocket-size (smartphone size you could say), so he can take them where ever he goes. In moments that he would normally be mindlessly scrolling on his phone, he now pulls out his sketchbook and begins to take in the world around him for inspiration. It reignited this love for drawing he has always had, but never seriously pursued. Now when he gets the chance he spends his lunch breaks in museums studying the work and sketching. He watches less TV because his desire to draw is greater than his desire to completely check out. I find it inspiring personally. Now I’m not telling you to trash your smartphone and become the next Matisse, Vangogh, or Degas. I still have my smartphone and I draw flowers and stick figures. I want to encourage you to start taking time away from all of the noise and lies of the world and spend more time doing things that bring you life. I’ve now started carrying a sketchbook with me most places and it has been lovely. So put down your phone and pick up your metaphorical sketchbook, whatever that may be.

5 Concrete reasons to put down your phone and pick up a sketchbook

  1. It relieves stress.

  2. You are more joyful not constantly scrolling.

  3. You are not wasting your time going numb.

  4. It is easier on the eyes. (No harsh light to give you headaches)

  5. It gets you out of your comfort zone, and you enter the creative zone. (It’s a party over here)
